Dementia Care & Support at Alpena Senior Citizens Center

At the Alpena Senior Citizens Center, we offer a specialized series of programs designed to improve the quality of life for individuals living with dementia and the caregivers who support them. Our programs are built around Empowerment, Engagement, and Support, with services led by certified professionals trained in dementia care.

What Is SPECAL®?

SPECAL® is a unique and effective dementia care method developed by the Contented Dementia Trust in the UK. It empowers caregivers with practical tools to promote lifelong well-being for individuals with dementia—without requiring medical knowledge.

All education at our center is taught by licensed SPECAL® coaches, giving families the tools and confidence to manage dementia care with dignity and understanding.

Dementia Support Programs

You Are Not Alone – Dementia Support Groups

A safe, compassionate space for caregivers and individuals with dementia to connect, share experiences, and find support. Talking to others who truly understand can provide comfort and clarity.

When: 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Where: Alpena Senior Center
No registration required.

Memory Café – Spark A Connection
A supportive social gathering designed for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Enjoy entertainment, simple crafts, snacks, and good company in a warm, judgment-free environment.

When: 2nd Wednesday of the month, 1:00 – 2:00 PM
Where: Alpena Senior Center

Miles for Memories – Wandering Solution
Designed for individuals in early to middle stages of dementia, this program provides a comfortable, waterproof bracelet that stores medical and emergency contact info accessible to first responders.

Caregivers control what information is shared

Info can be updated via phone app or online

Helps keep your loved one safe and supported
