Update on Purchasing the Senior Center

Most of you know that the AASSC, Inc. Board has made a request to the Alpena County Commissioners to purchase the Senior Center from the County.

There is a very long, rather complicated, history concerning the Center and its ownership.  To begin sorting out the components, the AASSC, Inc. Board met with the County’s Financial Committee last fall to begin the process.

During subsequent meetings, it was determined that the County owned both the Senior Center building and the lots upon which it stood.  However, the AASSC, Inc. Board owned the two parking lots adjacent to the building.  It was further determined that, by law, the County could not give the building to the AASSC, Inc. Board nor sell it to them for $1.00.  The law requires fair market price.

At the April 28, 2015 meeting of the County Commissioners, Judy Kalmanek on behalf of the board, told the county that Margie Haaxma of Banner Realty had compiled a Comparative Market Analysis of the Senior Center at the request of the AASSC, Inc. Board.  This was a donation that Margie made as a member of the Center’s Advisory Council.  The AASSC, Inc. Board was prepared now to enter into negotiations with the County to determine whether or not the AASSC, Inc. Board can purchase the Senior Center.

To that end, Chairman Commissioner Habermehl appointed an ad hoc committee consisting of himself, Lyle Van Wormer and Ron McDonald.  This committee will meet with Judy Kalmanek, AASSC, Inc. Board President and Josh Viegelahn, Treasurer of the Board to work out an equitable price for the Senior Center Building.
